From the Pastor??s Desk Relating to or affecting the human spirit or soul as opposed to material or physical things. ??Definition of spiritual from the Oxford dictionary ??I keep asking that the God of our Lord Jesus Christ, the glorious Father, may give you the Spirit of wisdom and revelation, so that you may know him better.???Ephesians 1:17 ??Now the Lord is the Spirit, and where the Spirit of the Lord is, there is freedom.? ??2 Corinthians 3:17 As I write these words this morning, I am waiting for the sun to rise over the neighboring peaks here in the Rockies. I am at Shadowcliff Lodge, Grand Lake, Colorado, attending ??The Gift of Story: Writing My Spiritual Autobiography? retreat. Currently I am sitting at an elevation of 8,550 feet, although yesterday as I drove through Rocky Mountain National Park, I reached elevations of over 12,000 feet. This is the last planned activity of my sabbatical and probably the most challenging. Many people asked me, ??How does one write their spiritual autobiography (SA)?? My answer to them had been, ??I am paying them to teach me how to do that.? However, after last night??s session, I am not sure that is the correct answer anymore. I just took a 30-minute break to step outside (44 degrees) to watch the sun come up and listen to the sounds of the morning: the wind in the trees and the rushing of the river, a distant call of a bird, and most importantly, quiet. I believe that we, I, need quiet to begin to understand and grasp what our individual spirituality is. It is not something that can be measured or stuffed into any box. One Holocaust survivor puts it this way, ??Whether or not we have a system of beliefs, a theology, how we make sense of the world (beliefs) intersects with what we find meaningful (spirituality) to create an orientation in the world that stimulates and guides us.? I think that is what I am looking for as an outcome from this retreat. I have a solid belief system, a theology, if you will. What I am looking to do is to deepen my relationship with the trinity (God, Jesus, Holy Spirit) with what is meaningful in my life. The presenter states that one??s SA is the story of an event that had a meaningful effect on one??s life. I am finding various stories that fit this definition, and then I must find the words to explain what I am thinking. I am rarely without something to say; however, having to learn to write it down (outside of a sermon or newsletter article) is a skill I am just beginning to appreciate. I am on the road to writing my SA; it probably won??t be finished by the time I leave here but being required to write about it and sharing it with the other participants is meaningful and helpful. They are on their own spiritual journeys, just as I am on mine. This sabbatical is taking me many places. Writing my SA is just one of the helpful experiences I am having this summer. My hope is that this will make me more appreciative of where I have been and where I am now, as well as appreciating the spiritual journeys that others are taking. I am looking forward to being back with everyone on September 2 and being able to share and put into practice new skills and ideas I have acquired over the summer. Peace and blessings.
