From the Pastor??s Desk ??Or do you not know that your body is a temple of the Holy Spirit within you, which you have from God, and that you are not your own? For you were bought with a price; therefore glorify God in your body.? ??1 Corinthians 6:19-20 ??So then, a sabbath rest still remains for the people of God; for those who enter God??s rest also cease from their labors as God did from his. Let us therefore make every effort to enter that rest, so that no one may fall through such disobedience as theirs.???Hebrews 4:9-11 ??Observe the sabbath day and keep it holy, as the Lord your God commanded you.? ??Deuteronomy 5:12 ??It is a sign for ever between me and the people of Israel that in six days the Lord made heaven and earth, and on the seventh day he rested, and was refreshed.???Exodus 31:17 As the time for my sabbatical draws near, I thought it might be a good idea to revisit the topic of sabbath. This was a topic that was the focus of a newsletter article a few years ago. A sabbath day is a much, much shorter sabbatical. Both a sabbath day and a sabbatical are taken for similar reasons. The sabbath (or sabbath day) is important for all of us. For those of you who might like different wording for sabbath, I suggest the term ??self-care??. I am called by God and this congregation to be your pastor, teacher and even shepherd. If I am called to be all these things, then I need to take care of myself. If I don??t take care of myself, then I cannot take care of you or anyone else. During seminary and then later during boundary training, I was often reminded of the importance of pastors practicing self-care. I have a confession to make: I stink at self-care. I understand the need for it, but I am just not good at executing it. I used to be a lot better when I first came to St. Peter??s. Monday is my day off and I held myself to that. Then as time progressed, life got in the way, and I started to slide. Ignoring self-care is not a good thing to do. Self-care and Sabbath time is called for in the scriptures. It is even one of the commandments, making it a requirement. ??Observe the sabbath day and keep it holy, as the Lord your God commanded you.? (Deuteronomy 5:12) When I wrote about sabbath in the past, I made a promise to be better at honoring my sabbath day. I have done a much better job of keeping my sabbath day safe since that time. My hope is that when I return from my sabbatical leave I will be able to continue holding to my sabbath day. They are very important. Sabbath is very important for all of us. So, I encourage you to look at your lives to see where you might be able to improve your own self-care habits. God's gift of the Sabbath in the Old Testament (Ex. 16:29), and invitation to enter Sabbath rest in the New Testament (Hebrews 4), is God??s intention for us to be blessed by recharging our batteries, feeding our souls, refilling our tanks. It's a form of self-care that is going to look different for various people, but it's all God's provision of what God knows we need. What does self-care look like for you? In the gospels, we see the Jesus' self-care as getting up early to spend time with God. He would no longer think of ministering in his own strength than we could successfully complete a road trip without stopping to refuel our gas tank. God has created our bodies, minds and souls; they belong to God, and we are responsible for taking care of them. If we are to be the best at carrying out God??s will in the world we must take care of ourselves. To be the best at spreading the Good News of Jesus we must take care of ourselves. Self-care is not selfishness, it is stewardship. How are you caring for God's treasure that is you? Peace, blessings and a restful Sabbath each week Pastor Dennis Please pray for these people on their designated day in May. 1) Vicki Lindenberger 2) Mike and Dorothy Luty 3) Mike and Kimba McCormick 4) Randy and Darcel Miles??Aisjha, Mars 5) Ellen Neufeld 6) Ray and Jeanne Osborn 7) Charlie and Carolyn Pauls 8) Lenore Postier 9) Loren and Denise Postier 10) Elva Rump 11) Devin, Jessica Schierling Karson, Kash, Kella 12) Gene and Karen Schierling 13) Roy and Shivawn Schierling 14) Dennis and Crystal Schroeder 15) Jerry and Ruth Sisson 16) Adam and Cassie Spears, Levi, Hailey 17) James and Sophia Stephens 18) Freddi Stowe 19) Allen Thiessen 20) Merle and Karen Thiessen 21) Verla Thomason 22) Donna and Jim Toews 23) Lamont, Kelly Turcotte, Aoife, Loki 24) Pastor Dennis Ureche Diane Miller 25) Peggy Watts 26) Marcelyn Wittorff 27) Lois Wright 28) Kathy Zimmerman 29) Greg and Heather Thiessen, Taylor, Brooke 30) Norman Achilles 31) Scott and Connie Achilles Revised Common Lectionary Readings for May May 6 Acts 10:44-48 Psalms 98 1 John 5:1-6 John 15:9-17 May 13 Acts 1:15-17, 21-26 Psalms 1 1 John 5:9-13 John 17:6-19 May 20 Acts 2:1-21 Psalms 104:24-34, 35b Romans 8:22-27 John 15:26-27; 16:4b-15 May 27 Isaiah 6:1-8 Psalms 29 Romans 8:12-17 John 3:1-17 ************************* Prayer List Ellen Angell, Colette Berger, Virginia Bosworth, Sandy Bundy, Janie Gormley, Glennis Lee Howard, Gretchen Kimble, Gene Allen Knackstedt, Kairos Prison Ministry, Judy & Wayne Lintz, McPherson Congregational Church, Beth Miller, Nathan Schierling, Jim and Sophia Stephens, Peggy Watts, Ellie Mae Weathers, Fern Raleigh, Reinecker Family, Sheridan Irick Family and Friends of Beverly Regier Family and Friends of John Obrien ************* Women??s Fellowship Thursday, May 3 2:00 p.m. ************* 4 H City Wide Garage Sales Saturday, May 5 Deadline is Wednesday, May 2 This is the largest fundraiser of the year for your local 4H. ************* Communion Sunday, May 6 *************** Men??s Fellowship Breakfast Meeting Saturday, May 12 7:00 a.m. Inman Harvest Café ************** City Wide Clean Up Day Saturday, May 12 ************* Graduation Sunday May 13 **************** Church Council Meeting Thursday, May 17 7:30 p.m. ************* Senior Center Breakfast Saturday, May 19 7:00 a.m. ************** Strengthen the Church Offering Sunday, May 20 ************ The Board of Christian Education will recognize our Sunday School teachers on Sunday, May 20 During Morning Worship ************** Pleasant View Home Worship Thursday, May 24 6:30 p.m. **************** Memorial Day Monday, May 28 ************** Memorial Day Remembrance North Inman Cemetery May 28, 10:00 a.m. ************ Inman Museum Cook Out Community Building, Lambert Park May 28, 11:00 a.m. Free will donations appreciated May Birthdays 7 Ruth Sisson 8 Jeanne Osborn Jonathon Castleberry 11 Gladys Erksin Kimba McCormick 15 Randy Miles 21 Jerry Sisson May Anniversaries 2 Adam and Katie Albers 5 Chris and Laura Stevenson 21 Cody and Ashley Bornholdt ************* AA Information Evening and Panel Discussion Hoffnungsau Mennonite Church Wednesday, May 16 7:00 p.m. This event will equip pastors and community leaders to help recognize and reach out to those in your communities struggling with addiction. ************* St. Peter??s will be receiving a check from Dillons Community Rewards in the amount of $33. 00. Graduation Sunday, May 13 Graduating from high school is Max Harman: After graduating high school, I plan to attend Kansas State University and major in biochemistry, which combines my long-standing interests in the smallest interactions of the world (chemistry and physics) and the complexity of life (biology). While earning my bachelor??s degree, I want to gain research experience and graduate in the top 10% of my class, then attend graduate school to earn my master??s and Ph.D. After graduate school, I want to work at an agri-chemical company like Monsanto. With a background in biochemistry/molecular biology, I intend to use genetic engineering to develop products that give tangible benefits of GE to the public and more choices to producers. I have always wanted to have a career in academia as a researcher, but it was my experience in FFA that inspired in me a passion for global food systems and ag advocacy. Most people wouldn??t think of Biochemistry as an agricultural major, but through my work, I hope to shed some light on the often-ignored researchers working hard to advance agriculture every day. By combining my passions, I hope to make a career doing something I love and make a lasting impact on the world. A come and go reception will be held at St. Peter??s on Saturday, May 12 (after graduation), appx 4:30 p.m. Everyone is invited to come and celebrate with Max on this milestone in his life. ************** Mars Miles will be returning home for the summer and is looking forward to returning to the United States for college in the fall. ************ Graduating from college are Landon Slipke: Landon will graduate from Bethany College on Sunday, May 20, with a B.M.E. in Vocal Music Education and plans to get a job teaching vocal music somewhere in Kansas. ***** Kristen Knackstedt: Kristen Knackstedt will graduate from K state, with a major in animal science. It's Eastertide and we should be renewed and invigorated for ministry. In some ways we are but we are also aware of the pain in our communities, the divisions in our country, the growing gap between the haves and have nots; it's easy to forget that Easter is here. But Easter IS here and we are reminded that our hope is not dependent on the present circumstances of our day and time. Our hope is in the Christ who promises to make all things new and with gratitude we join as co-creators of the abundant life promised to all. It is in this spirit that each year at Eastertide, members and friends are invited to give generously to the Annual Appeal for the Kansas-Oklahoma Conference. Your gifts make it possible for us to embody the love of Christ throughout Kansas and Oklahoma. With your dollars we: Support congregations in searching for new leadership; nine churches have experienced pastoral transitions in the last 12 months; your dollars supported them in the search and call process for interim and settled leadership. Lead KO churches and members (and many beyond KO) in confronting and exploring racism and specifically white privilege and its impact on their lives and the lives of others. Participate in the faith formation of youth as we are preparing for the Regional Youth Event; we expect over 25 KO youth to participate as well as 10 youth from Germany. Nurture and support those exploring a call to ordained ministry; there are six Members in Discernment, three persons have been approved for ordination pending call this last year and one person has been ordained. Conect our churches and members through weekly eNEWS and social media. Care for pastors though support, guidance and encouragement. Resource local congregations experiencing conflict or seeking direction Challenge KO congregations to Be the Church in their community through the implementation and oversight of the of Be the Church Grants. Facilitate KO participation in justice initiatives in Kansas and Oklahoma; interfaith participation and overseas partnerships. Represent Kansas-Oklahoma in the wider United Church of Christ. Thank you for making a special gift to the Conference during this season of Eastertide where we celebrate the gift of our Risen Christ and as we joyfully claim our sacred call to join in making all things new.
